What does an inverter actually do?
Simply put, an inverter converts DC or Direct Current to AC or Alternating Current. This means that with an inverter installed you'll be able to run mains appliances in your vehicle.
What's so special about this inverter?
Charging function - Not only is this an inverter, its also a battery charger too. When you're hooked up on mains, it'll sense the power and then convert this back to DC voltage to charge up your leisure battery. This means when you're on site, you can continue to use your 12V accessories such as lights etc. without fear of your leisure battery running out of power.
Low frequency - Unlike many other inverters, this one is low frequency and contains a large transformer. This means the peak or surge power can be up to three times the continuous power. Low frequency inverters are often more reliable and long lasting than high frequency ones due to the quality of the components.
Earthing - While on hook up, the earth is passed through the inverter to the consumer unit. When running on battery power, the outgoing neutral and earth are electrically connected together. This provides an earth path in the event of fault conditions.
Automatic change over - There's no need to fit a changeover switch with this inverter. It's all built in. When mains is sensed, the unit will swap over from battery power (when in the relevant mode).
High power - The inverter can supply a continuous 2000W (2kW) of power with a surge of 6000W (6kW). This is provided at 240V 50Hz.
Power saving mode - This allows the inverter to essentially be in a standby mode. It will sense when power is required (for example, you plug something in and turn it on) and the inverter will power up straight away. This saves any unnecessary battery drain when you're not using it.
Uninterrupted power supply - When plugged in on site, if for any reason the cable was to be unplugged, the unit will sense this and swap immediately over to battery power without disrupting the supply, ensuring all your mains equipment is kept running.
Hard wired connections - This inverter is designed to be hard wired so we've done away with any sockets that may shake loose and provided industry standard screw terminals to wire into your consumer unit.
LCD display - This screen shows various information to the user regarding power being generated and battery information.
Remote control (Optional) - The unit can come with a remote control with a 5M lead which is ideal if you are placing the inverter in a ventilated cupboard or space that you can't easily access. It allows you to turn the unit on or off and select power savings modes.
Strong construction - You'll notice this as soon as its delivered. The inverter is extremely well made. A complete metal case ensures long lasting and tough protection from any potential damage
What can you power from it?
The unit comes has a continuous power output of 2000W. This means in theory it can run any mains appliance up to that power. For example, if you had a hair dryer rated at 1000W, it would power it. However, if you have a mains heater that was 3000W, it wouldn't.
The operating time of the inverter is determined by the size and type of battery you use, but more specifically it is determined by how much power you draw. Follow the below steps to roughly calculate the battery capacity you may use (this is the same for any 12V inverters, not just ours) -
Establish how many watts each piece of equipment consumes. This usually can be found on the power information label. If only current draw is given, you can estimate the watt consumption by multiplying current draw by 230.
Estimate the time in hours you will be running each appliance between charging your battery.
Calculate the total watt hours of energy consumption (power x operating time).
Divide the watt hours by 12 to determine how many Ah will be used.
For example (assuming a two day period without any form of battery charging) - A hairdryer consumes 1000W and a laptop charger consumes 100W. The hairdryer is used for 15 minutes a day and the laptop charger for 3 hours a day. The hairdryers consumption over the two day period would be 500Wh (1000W X 0.5). The laptop chargers consumption would be 600Wh (100W X 6). Total consumption over the two days would be 1100Wh. This would use 92Ah of battery power (1100Wh/12).

How does it connect to the van on the 12V DC side?
You just need to wire it up to your leisure battery via appropriate rated cable and fusing.
How does it connect to the van on the 240V AC side?
Power into the inverter will come from the hook up installed in your van via a small consumer unit with a double pole RCD and MCB to protect it. This will also provide an earth to the chassis of the van and the body of the inverter. It's vital this is fitted.

For leisure battery technology we would normally recommend AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat batteries.
In regards to capacity, for running this 2KW Inverter, the minimum we would recommend would be a battery or battery bank with a 300Ah capacity.
We recommend all wiring and installation be carried out by a qualified professional. Disconnect all AC and DC power sources to prevent accidental shock. It is the installer’s responsibility to ensure compliance with all the applicable installation codes, regulations, and to ensure the equipment is fitted correctly.
