How Does a DC-DC Charger Work?

Modern smart alternators can produce a much wider and less consistent voltage range than traditional alternators. Depending on driving conditions, alternator output can drop to around 12V or rise above 15V — neither of which is ideal for directly charging a leisure battery.

The DC-DC charger takes this variable input voltage and converts it into a stable, controlled charging voltage, allowing your leisure battery to receive a more efficient and reliable charge while the engine is running.

Charging is managed through a multi-stage charging process, including:

• Bulk Charging – delivers maximum available charging current to quickly replenish the battery
• Absorption Charging – maintains the correct charging voltage as the battery approaches full charge
• Float Charging – maintains the battery safely once fully charged, where applicable to the selected battery technology

When used with compatible lithium batteries, the charger also includes a low-voltage reactivation function, helping to wake batteries that have entered protection due to a very low state of charge.

Will It Work With My Van?

Yes. The charger is compatible with both smart alternators and conventional fixed-voltage alternators.

Even on vehicles without a smart alternator, a DC-DC charger can provide a more controlled and dependable charging method than a traditional Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR). It also allows vehicles to safely take advantage of modern lithium leisure battery technology.
